Illuminating the Adult Where the Ego Obscures

A coastal landscape with a dark sky and a curtain of rain falling over the ocean. The image accompanies a reflection on the role of parents in meeting children’s vital needs and on the way adults illuminate one another where the ego obscures vision.

Our relationship with our children is clear: we are here to support them in establishing their vital relations – to clean air, to nourishing organic matter, to pure water, to adequate shelter, and to respectful relations with themselves and others.

In adulthood, we can generally attempt to establish these vital relations on our own.
So what, then, is the purpose of our bonds with other adults?

Is it not to illuminate one another
where our egos – our identifications – prevent us from doing so?

And is this illumination not something every adult needs – from their children, and from other adults as well?
