The Illusion of the Thinker

A single body grounded in actuality, with a floating field of cards representing possible relationships, past and future selves, people, places, and situations. One card emerges, triggering the bodily sensation we call emotion — illustrating how thinking is the movement within possibilities, not contact with reality

Thinking is not contact with reality – it’s a movement within possibilities. 🃏

We assume there is a “thinker” separate from our thoughts, yet when we watch someone else thinking, we experience them as a whole. What if the separation we feel in ourselves is just an illusion?

This illusion shapes how we interpret emotions, relate to others, and even how we experience our bodies. Identifying with the thinker keeps us chasing possibilities instead of meeting what’s actually here, now.

The essay uses the analogy of a deck of cards to explore how thoughts arise, how emotions are felt in the body, and how this illusion shows up in daily life.
