When Fear Becomes Fashion: A Reflection on Symbols, Power, and Medicine

Goodness is nature

I commented on a LinkedIn post about a professor’s recruitment – not on the person, but on the decision to display a skull and snake tattoo in a professional photo.

The post sparked thousands of reactions. No one supported my view, and what struck me was not disagreement but how quickly the symbol was normalised – and how standards differ depending on power.

It made me reflect on how fear-based imagery has become fashionable, and how medicine itself is structured around the fear of death. What happens when fear becomes the unquestioned ground of our decisions?

I expanded this reflection in my Substack post.
